VISAS

Holders of New Zealand and Australian passports do not require a visa for short stays (tourism) of up to 90 days.

New Zealand residents who are citizens of third countries that require a tourist visa for Schengen countries and where Portugal is the first country of entry to the Schengen area, can apply to the French Embassy in Wellington: http://www.ambafrance-nz.org/Coordonnees. As the Schengen visa process requires the collection of biometric data, applicants need to make an appointment to appear in person at the Embassy in Wellington.

The Consul-General has advised that, contrary to the information contained in some official websites, the Portuguese authorities are of the opinion that the Schengen Agreement supersedes earlier bi-lateral agreements. Tourists are permitted to stay in Portugal, without a visa, for a period not exceeding 90 days, in the aggregate for all Schengen countries.

The Honorary Consulates in New Zealand are not authorised to issue visas.  All other applications, for example for work, study or residency visas, must be made to the Consulate-General of Portugal in Sydney, to where all inquiries should be directed:
