Portuguese passports include biometric data, which requires applicants to appear in person at the Honorary Consulate in Auckland. It is no longer possible to apply by post. Passports can only be issued to holders of a valid and current identity card ("Bilhete de Identidade" or "Cartão de Cidadão").

The Honorary Consulate in Auckland is not authorised to process applications for the "Cartão de Cidadão". If you do not have an identity card, or if yours has expired, you need to go to Sydney, to a Consulate in some other countries or to Portugal.

The applicant needs to appear in person at the issuing office. If you do not have another valid passport, you can apply for a temporary passport to enable you to travel to a country where you can apply for an ID card. The temporary passport is valid for a short period and the fee is NZ$255.

When renewing your passport in Auckland, you will need to produce your ID card and, if you have one, the current Portuguese passport. You do not need to bring photos. The collection of biometric data takes usually less than 30 minutes per applicant.

The fee is NZ$135, plus $5 if you request return by courier to a destination in New Zealand. The fee is payable in cash, by credit card or by direct banking deposit to account number 02-0191-0322861-01.

The passport will normally be issued within ten days of application (but subject to occasional delays). It is possible to request urgency, subject to an additional fee of $75. If you have a current prior passport but do not produce it for cancellation (after which it is returned to you), an additional fee of $95 applies.

If you have a visa in your current passport, you will need to take the cancelled passport, along with the new passport, to the Immigration Service to have your visa transferred. Passports are valid for five years.

DS     The Honorary Consul is Mr. Daniel Silva.
Attendance is by appointment. Appointments are normally available on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays between 12:30pm and 2:30pm. To make an appointment, please contact the Consulate by email advising the preferred dates and the service required.
