If you were born outside Portugal but at least one of your parents has or had Portuguese nationality, you may be entitled to Portuguese nationality.

This is a three-step process:

1. Apply by mail to Sydney to register your birth. See instructions below.
2. When you receive the Portuguese birth certificate, apply for an identity card.
3. When the ID card is issued, apply for a passport in Auckland.

Applications are processed by the Portuguese Consulate-General in Sydney, to where all inquiries should be directed:

Level 17, 55 Clarence Street, Sydney NSW 2000
Tel: +61 2 9262 2199    Fax: +61 2 9262 5991

Applicants need to fill in some forms and post or courier them to the Consulate in Sydney along with payment of the required fees. The forms and instructions can be found in the Consulate-General’s website.

Similar procedures apply to marriage registrations, which may need to be completed before the births of children can be registered. The same website contains instructions on how to apply for registered birth certificates.

People born in Goa before 1961 have a set of different requirements and need to direct their inquiries (in Portuguese) to the Central Registry Office in Lisbon:
